Progress over Perfection
The Destroyer of Joy
I would describe myself as someone who was, and sometimes still is, very perfectionistic. I managed to overcome most of it. It is destroying your sense of joy and self-worth rather than helping you on your journey to success. Being perfectionistic means having extremely high standards for yourself and valuing yourself based on your achievements. This also means always demanding the absolute best performance of yourself and judging every mistake you make in an extremely harsh way.
What Being Overly Perfectionistic Causes
You won't be able to live in the moment because you will only be thinking about the end goal.
It takes enjoyment from your achievements; your head is always focused on the next big thing and won't acknowledge the successes you already had.
Since you’re only seeing the end result, you won't recognize the small progress you make each day, which will lead you to think you're not doing anything at all. This will increase stress and anxiety.
A feeling of not being someone without success.
Procrastination because of overthinking.
It Can Be Helpful
Having some perfectionistic traits is not bad at all. I would call it having an ambitious mindset and striving for excellence. But as you can see, having too much of it will eventually cost you your mental health and your success in the long run.
Your Mission Until Sunday
Ask the people around you if they would describe you as someone who is perfectionistic. After that, start looking at how you perceive the world around you. Are you enjoying your experiences, or do you always think about how it will be more enjoyable as you achieve more? Really start to recognize if you’re living in the moment or if you're anxious about the future. After you’ve done that and come to a conclusion, I will provide you with three solutions that you can immediately implement into your life so you can turn your perfectionism into an advantage and make progress.
