Beyond Limits with Damien - The Importance of Mentorship

You've probably heard it a couple of times: find a mentor who can guide you in the direction, where they've already succeeded in. It will make many things easier for you. However, before you look for a mentor, you really need to understand what you're looking for. That means understanding what they have achieved that you value and what exactly you can learn from them. I've made some wrong choices and had some wrong mentors in my life.

I never really understood what I should be looking for in a mentor. Just because someone looks successful, for example, has a nice watch, a nice car, or is living a life of luxury, does not mean they are the right mentor for you, even if that's the same life you want to attain. So in the next couple of minutes, I want to give you some information about mentorship and what kind of values you should look for.

What is Mentorship?

To make it simple, great mentorship is when there is someone you admire who is already at the place you want to be at and can give you counsel and advice on your journey. A mentor is different for everybody. Some people have a really close relationship with their mentor, and others have a really one-sided relationship with them, which means they know who the person is, but the mentor doesn’t. It doesn’t matter which one of these examples is your reality; it could even be the case that you don’t have a mentor. But you need a basic understanding of what a real mentor should do for you.

So first, a mentor should guide you and not tell you what to do. This means stop looking for exact answers to your current situation because everyone goes through struggles differently. So what worked for person A in that situation might not work for you. But the way they handled that situation can give you a different outlook on the problem at hand so that you can see a fitting solution that is right for you and your skillset.

Also, something crucial to mentorship is that a mentor is not there to motivate you! They are there to inspire you. It's not their job to stand in your corner telling you, "Yeah, you can do it." It's more about showing you that there is a way to become the person you aspire to be; they stand there as an example and not a coach telling you to push harder when you're not feeling like working.

How Can I Find the Right Mentor for Me?

Do not let money blind you! Really look into the person and find out what they are really about. So let's start with a mentor on the internet. Someone who can give you value even when you’re just consuming their content without them knowing you.
