The Rise of AI: Opportunity or Threat to Human Jobs? Part II
Welcome back to BYC: Grow Through Conversation. In our last episode, we explored the initial impact of AI on the job market. Today, we dive deeper into this complex topic with fresh insights and perspectives.
New Developments in AI and Employment
Generative AI and Creative Industries: Generative AI, which includes tools like those developed by Runway, is transforming creative fields such as filmmaking and marketing. These AI tools can produce high-quality video content, create deepfake avatars, and even lip-sync performances to different languages. This technology is being adopted by major studios like Paramount and Disney, potentially reducing the need for human actors in some roles while creating new opportunities in AI content creation and management .
Reskilling and Upskilling: According to the World Economic Forum, almost half of an individual’s skills will need to change on average across all jobs. Analytical and creative thinking, technological literacy, and lifelong learning are becoming increasingly important. As AI automates routine tasks, the demand for these advanced skills is rising, emphasizing the need for continuous education and training.
The Dual Impact of AI
Job Displacement and Creation: While AI is expected to displace certain jobs, particularly those involving routine tasks, it also creates new roles. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report predicts that 83 million jobs will be eliminated by 2027 due to AI, but 69 million new jobs will be created, leading to a net decrease of 14 million jobs globally. Fields such as renewable energy, sustainability, and education are expected to see significant job growth.
Economic Shifts: AI's impact extends beyond individual jobs to broader economic changes. For example, AI is driving the development of new industries and roles that did not exist a few years ago. This shift is reminiscent of past technological revolutions, which, despite initial job losses, ultimately led to greater overall employment and economic growth. However, this transition requires significant investment in skills and infrastructure to support displaced workers and ensure they can benefit from new opportunities.
